About the project

The aim of the Visual Art Saving Lives project was to produce 1,000 bound essential card training tools for CareFlight’s Remote Training Course. The course was designed to teach lifesaving skills to people whose first, second and sometimes third language is not English. These training tools provided a durable ready reference to Indigenous first aid responders while in the field. The cards were developed in consultation with Aboriginal community members. This is the second CareFlight NT project supported by ABF.

How we helped

The Aboriginal Benefits Foundation provided $5,000 to fund the production of 1,000 bound essential training tools.

Outcomes

These cards were used as an essential training tool in CareFlight’s Remote Trauma Course. The images helped CareFlight’s clinical educators in teaching by ‘yarning’, a storytelling approach to teaching advanced first aid skills. The presentation shown during the workshop carries the same imagery and messaging as the cards. In this way, the visuals reinforce and help participants remember the lifesaving techniques when needed.

Workshop participants received hands-on training on the procedures and skills that coincide with the images on the cards. The cards depict a systematic approach to critical care, are waterproof and suitable for a car glovebox. They are designed as a reference tool to follow when participants encounter a critical incident in their community. Remote Trauma Course participants receive the cards in their ‘take-home pack’ after the course.
