NOWRA YOUTH SERVICES – CULTURAL CONNECTION – RECONNECTING OUR ELDERS

About This Project

About Nowra Youth Services

Also known to young people as “The Youthie”, Nowra Youth Services Inc. was incorporated in 2003 and works as a not-for-profit, non-government organisation managed by a Centre Manager and a volunteer Management Committee. They are a community-based organisation for young people between the ages of 12 to 17 years and 18 to 24 years respectively. Nowra Youth Centre’s activities provide a platform for Young people to feel safe, included and respected.

About the project

Nowra Youth Services  cultural project aims to reconnect the local Aboriginal Elders with community post COVID-19, through education on Aboriginal culture with the production of a calendar including pictures of our Elders at sites of significance along with basic Aboriginal art symbols explained in language. This project will take place at sites of significance that the Elders retain their connection to.

How the ABF helped

We provided a grant of $5,000 to this project.

Upon enquiry it was emphasised that the photos and stories would be immeasurably important for Nowra Indigenous youth as both educative and as a matter of respect towards their Elders. And for the Elders, it would be a tribute that they would be most proud of.
